The Sailing decanter pays tribute to the magnificent sport of modern yacht racing, which had its beginnings in the 1600’s. Many consider that the first recorded yacht race took place under King Charles II, on September 6th 1662, out of Greenwich, England. On the shoulder of the decanter are three cameos – Joshua Slocum’s the ‘spray’, the first man to sail alone around the world 1895/1898 – The schooner ‘America’, winner of the first America’s cup race August 1851 and the ‘Jolie Brise’ winner of the first fastnet race 1925.

The general shape of the Nelson Decanter came about in the second half of the 18th Century, developed by a British admiral, by the name of Rodney. He introduced one at the victory celebration on board his flagship following the famous Moonlight battle and the battle of the saints in 1780 and 1782. The decanter had a very broad base, up to 12 inches in diameter, to ensure stability when at sea.
